Club Car OBC Bypass Guide for Electric Golf Buggies

Club Car electric golf buggies and utility vehicles are used across Europe on golf courses, holiday parks, estates, resorts, marinas, industrial sites, and private properties. Many older electric Club Car models are fitted with an Onboard Computer, commonly known as the OBC, which helps manage charging and certain electrical functions. When the OBC fails or becomes unnecessary after a charger or battery upgrade, a bypass may be considered.

OBC Bypass for Club Car IQ and Excel Models
On Club Car IQ and Excel models, the OBC bypass normally involves selecting the correct positive control feed. In many vehicles, the White wire and Blue wire are the main wires involved. Depending on the harness, the Red/White wire may also be considered if its gauge makes it more suitable.
If the White wire and Red/White wire are the same gauge, the White wire is commonly used together with a 10-amp inline fuse. If the Red/White wire is larger, it may be the better option. A fused feed is preferred because it protects the low-current control circuit and reduces the risk of damage if a short occurs.
The bypass should also maintain safe Tow/Run behaviour. When the Tow/Run switch is set to Tow, the cart should not continue supplying power to the controller connector in a way that allows unexpected operation. Some installers may use the Red wire for non-fused 48V power, but an unfused power feed is generally less safe and should be avoided unless a qualified technician confirms it is appropriate for that specific vehicle.

The same general safety rules apply: identify the correct wire, use suitable wire gauge, add appropriate fuse protection, and make sure the Tow/Run system still behaves safely after the bypass. This is especially important for fleet vehicles, imported carts, or refurbished buggies where wiring may have been changed over time.
Do not rely on wire colour alone if the vehicle history is unknown. Compare the harness to the correct wiring diagram, inspect all connectors, and use a multimeter to confirm voltage and continuity before making permanent connections.

Series carts use a different electrical arrangement. On many Club Car Series models, the OBC controls the negative side of the solenoid circuit through the Yellow wire. Because of this, the bypass method focuses on rerouting the solenoid negative control path.
To bypass the OBC on a Series cart, the Yellow wire is typically disconnected from the OBC and connected to a suitable negative point, such as the controller B- terminal or the main battery pack negative. This removes the OBC from the solenoid control loop and allows the circuit to complete without it.
The negative connection must be clean, secure, correctly rated, and properly insulated. A weak negative connection can cause intermittent running, solenoid clicking, controller faults, or complete failure to operate. Avoid loose terminals, temporary jumpers, exposed copper, or wiring routed near moving suspension parts or sharp frame edges.

Why Bypass the OBC?
An OBC bypass is usually considered when the original onboard computer is faulty, incompatible with a new charger, or unnecessary after a battery system upgrade. Many older Club Car vehicles in Europe are refurbished, imported, or used in commercial fleets, so electrical systems may already have been changed before the current owner receives the cart.
Common reasons for bypassing the OBC include:
- Faulty OBC operation: A failed OBC can stop charging, interrupt operation, or create hard-to-diagnose electrical issues.
- Modern charger upgrade: Some replacement chargers manage charging independently and do not require the original OBC.
- Lithium battery conversion: Lithium battery systems normally rely on their own battery management system and a compatible lithium charger.
